Our Story

Opened in 1946 and owned by the same family since 1978, Steels has gained a nationwide reputation built on quality and quantity of helpings.

We are particularly noted for our traditional fish & chips but our menu also includes a wide variety of traditional fare including special grills and steaks. Vegetarians are well catered for and we offer a wide range of starters and genuine home made sweets. Children are especially welcome and have their own extensive menu. Steels boasts two fully air-conditioned dining rooms and is non-smoking throughout.

The restaurant has been enormously popular for over 30 years with queues regularly extending along the street. Ingredients for the menu are purchased daily from local suppliers to ensure that only the freshest food is served.

A typical years shopping list includes

  • 6,500 stone of haddock fillets
  • 100 tonne of potatoes
  • 42,000 eggs
  • 3,000 tins of peas
  • 12,000 loaves of bread
  • 600 gallons of ice cream
  • 3000lb of butter
  • 4000 pints of milk

  • 5250lb of mushrooms
